Education
Confusing. Complicated. Intense. Overwhelming.
These are words often used to describe the early days of breastfeeding. While these words may ring true for many new parents - it does not have to be this way.
The breastfeeding journey is often abandoned early on. The combination of breastfeeding myths, incorrect or outdated information, biases, personal experiences, as well as the normal challenges of new parenthood, often lead to a sense of failure.
Mistrust in the process of lactation is everywhere and is often accompanied by a message that implies that breastfeeding may not work and is difficult to sustain. These concepts are perpetuated by mass media, commercial marketing, and culture in general.
Most of the challenges that families encounter are common and there is a solid base of evidence on how best to manage them. The Mother Baby-Friendly Initiative is backed by science and is designed to remove barriers to establishing normal lactation.
Families deserve accurate information about infant feeding, access to efficient and effective assistance when they need it, and an environment and culture which support them to meet their own breast-feeding goals.

Anyone who works with pregnant, laboring, birthing, and postpartum individuals can benefit from this course. It is an important foundation of knowledge for anyone preparing for the IBCLC exam.
For individuals who already practice lactation in any capacity and with any level of experience, there are elements of this course which may be useful in improving organization of lactation care and simplifying routines for the benefit of both client and provider.
